Lesson 3: Decision support system

A Decision Support System (DSS) is a computer-based information system that supports business or organizational decision-making activities. DSSs serve the management, operations, and planning levels of an organization (usually mid and higher management) and help to make decisions, which may be rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance (Unstructured and Semi-Structured decision problems). Decision support systems can be either fully computerized, human or a combination of both.

Management information systems can help you make valid decisions by providing accurate and up-to-date information and performing analytic functions. You have to make sure the management information system you choose can work with the information formats available in your company and has the features you need. Suitable management information systems can structure the basic data available from your company operations and records into reports to present you with guidance for your decisions. When you base your decisions on data available from management information systems, they reflect information that comes from the operations of your company. Lesson 8: What Is a MIS?

A management information system, or MIS, is a computer-based system that provides managers with the tools to run their department effectively. Relative to other types of specialized information systems, an MIS is used by mid-level management to support ongoing operations. The emphasis is on making routine decisions. MIS relies mostly on internal sources of information.
Management information systems are software programs that are used to generate reports on your business performance. Firms of all sizes can benefit – even small businesses. With an MIS program, you can produce performance summaries with any frequency, using them to supervise activities, make progress checks and spot any deviations from normal business procedures.

A Management Information System or MIS is a systematic, uniform method for collecting and reporting information about a particular program, event, or activity. MIS structures vary greatly in terms of the way information flows into the system, the types of reports generated, and the level of detail. The amount of reliance on computers is a variable that affects the way an MIS is structured. Some require highly trained staff for data entry, quality control, and other MIS functions; other systems are less sophisticated. Ultimately, an organization’s MIS is based on its unique needs, capabilities and resources.
